Description

The Aflac Cancer and Blood Disorders Center of Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta (Children’s), Emory University School of Medicine (Emory) and Morehouse School of Medicine (MSM) are partnering in a $16M expansion of its Sickle Cell Disease Program, supported by an award from the Georgia Research Alliance, and investments from Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, Emory University, and Morehouse School of Medicine. This initiative will focus on therapeutic development in sickle cell disease and includes the addition of three faculty members at Emory and one at Morehouse School of Medicine. The Aflac Cancer and Blood Disorders Center of Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta and the Emory University Department of Pediatrics invites qualified applicants to apply for the keystone position of this initiative as Director of the Sickle Cell Disease Program.

 

This position offers a wealth of opportunities for research collaborations within the Department of Pediatrics, Winship Cancer Institute, Grady Hospital, as well as with Emory basic science departments, the Rollins School of Public Health, the Georgia Institute of Technology, Morehouse School of Medicine and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. 

 

Job Duties and Responsibilities

 

    • Provide unifying leadership for the clinical and research components of the Sickle Cell Disease Program of the Aflac Cancer and Blood Disorders Center.
    • Coordinate basic, translational and clinical research efforts in sickle cell disease at Emory and Children’s, with the goal of expanding the availability and utilization of existing treatments and developing new therapeutic approaches.
    • Coordinate clinical care across the three campuses of the program at Scottish Rite, Egleston, and Hughes Spalding Hospitals as well as The Children’s Healthcare Network (TCCN) and community-based partners.  
    • Provide academic leadership and professional mentorship for approximately 18 faculty focused on sickle cell disease.
    • Lead an integrated city-wide Atlanta Sickle Cell Disease Consortium and expand and strengthen collaborations with investigators from other divisions and departments at Emory, Georgia Tech, Georgia State and the Morehouse School of Medicine, with the goal of building a nationally pre-eminent sickle cell disease program.
    • Conduct state-of-the-art research in sickle cell disease.
    • Set an example of excellence, compassion, and cultural sensitivity in clinical care for sickle cell disease.
    • Participate in the leadership of the Aflac Cancer and Blood Disorders Center by serving on the Aflac Executive Committee.
    • Represent the Aflac Sickle Cell Disease Program and Emory to the Atlanta community and at the national/international level.

 

Qualifications

 

Candidates should hold current appointments at the Associate Professor or Professor level. Successful candidates will have:

    • MD, DO, or MD/PhD degrees
    • Board Certification in Pediatric Hematology-Oncology and/or Adult Hematology
    • Currently licensed as a physician and eligible for licensure as a physician in the State of Georgia
    • Qualifications for appointment as professor at Emory University
    • National recognition in Sickle Cell Disease research (either as a clinical, outcomes, or implementation science researcher or as a translational researcher)
    • A strong record of academic excellence/achievement and funding as an independent investigator
    • A history of academic excellence/achievement
    • A record of mentorship of faculty to support growth in research and scholarship
    • Experience in service or leadership in a hematology-oncology program

 

Salary and rank of Professor at the Emory University School of Medicine will be commensurate with experience and accomplishment. This position will be expected to engage in clinical service and mentorship of junior faculty and will have dedicated time for administrative duties.

 

Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta and Emory University have worked together since 1956, facilitating leading-edge pediatric research, training, and innovation. Hematologists on the faculty of Morehouse School of Medicine have provided clinical care and research in the Aflac Cancer and Blood Disorders Center for more than 20 years. Together, our partnerships advance research and facilitate evidence-based quality care for children. In 2020, the Emory Department of Pediatrics was the #1 ranked pediatric department in National Institutes of Health research funding. This position will have an appointment at Emory and Children’s and will help strengthen the relationship between Children’s and Morehouse School of Medicine.
